INPHO96: Advantages
- Universal, platform-independent client very compelling (Web browser)
- Cost
- No private network to lay
- Commercial companies bear the capital cost
- Tangible cost savings to using the Internet to connect remote sites to corporate network (Giga Information Group)
- Reduced training and support costs
- Flexibility, especially in a loosely-coupled "organization" like public health
- Potential for universal access by health officers, consumers, providers, insurance companies (CHIN)
81% of respondents in the 1996 HIMSS/HP Leadership Survey reported use of the Internet in some capacity at their site
- Amazingly cool tools being developed and used aimed at a universal client - WWW browser
- Security
- Need to do formal assessment
- Need to protect information assets from destruction or alteration
- But, encryption technologies and secure Web products are now maturing and becoming more plentiful
- Not all data requires the highest level of protection
