INPHO96: Challenges
- Congestion
- 8/96: 12.8 million nodes, excluding those hiding behind fire walls (Source: General Magic, Inc.), but Internet will likely grow incrementally as needs require
- Protocol problems as Internet continues to scale, but new protocols will provide guaranteed service levels for transactions
- High latency even if bandwidth is adequate, but more careful planning within a limited geography can overcome this to a large degree
- Address limitations, but new addressing schemes (IPv6) will fix this
- Security
- Need to do formal assessment
- Need to protect information assets from destruction or alteration
- But, encryption technologies and secure Web products are now maturing and becoming more plentiful
- Not all data requires the highest level of protection
