Several problems exist with the current building topology:
- It may exceed the ethernet specification for populated segments and repeater count in many cases.
- User-installed repeaters deployed from wall plates are not possible.
- Because of the large number of devices in some buildings, the collision domains are excessively large leading to unstable ethernets.
- Bandwidth requirements within a building and between buildings above 10Mb/sec shared ethernet are difficult to provide.
