Validating immunization logic just got easier.
HLN Consulting launched CDS Insight, a new interactive platform designed to support the testing and demonstration of the Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE), an open-source, evidence-based immunization forecasting service. Built for public health, clinicians, and developers, it provides a dedicated environment to evaluate and test immunization logic — ensuring patient vaccination histories are accurately analyzed, and appropriate recommendations are generated.
Key Features of CDS Insight for Demonstrating ICE Logic
- Interactive: Users can create and run test cases through an HLN-hosted version of ICE, to see the ICE web service in action.
- Evaluation & Forecasting: The tool checks the validity of administered vaccinations against the latest recommendations and returns forecasting recommendations across vaccine groups.
- User-Friendly: Users can create new patients, load sample patients to populate data quickly, and easily navigate the application.
The Test Cases dashboard shown above gives users a clean, organized view of all active patient simulations. Each case displays key details — name, description, patient date of birth, and last modified date — with quick-action buttons to run, edit, or delete. Managing multiple test cases is straightforward from this single screen.
- Customizable Evaluation Dates: Users can adjust the assessment date to see how recommendations change over time — a critical feature for longitudinal logic verification.
- Validation Tools: CDS Insight allows clinicians and developers to see the ICE Default Immunization Schedule rules in action and verify results.

The Run Results screen breaks down ICE recommendations and evaluations by vaccine group. Each dose in the patient’s history is flagged as Valid or Invalid, with a plain-language reason when something doesn’t pass. Forecasting shows if a vaccine is recommended, and if so, the recommended date, the earliest date, and the overdue date — all in a single view.
